Steven Durlauf - Inequality, Growth and Sociological Ideas in Economic Analysis.
A discussion with Steven Neil Durlauf, the Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor and the Director of the Stone Center for Research on Wealth Inequality and Mobility at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. Prior to this appointment, he was William F. Vilas Research Professor and Kenneth J. Arrow Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Durlauf received a BA in economics from Harvard in 1980, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a Ph.D. in economics from Yale in 1986. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory, a Fellow of the International Association of Applied Econometrics, and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011.
Durlauf was Co-Director of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Working Group from 2010 to 2022, an international research network linking scholars across disciplines in the study of inequality and the sources of human flourishing and destitution. Additionally, Durlauf served as Economics Program Director of the Santa Fe institute from 1996-1998. He is currently a General Editor of the Elsevier Handbooks in Economics series and was a General Editor of The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, revised edition, published in 2008. He also served as the Editor of the Journal of Economic Literature from 2013 to 2022.
Durlauf's research spans many topics in economics, with his most important contributions involving the areas of poverty, inequality, and economic growth. Much of his research has attempted to integrate sociological ideas into economic analysis. He helped pioneer the application of statistical mechanics techniques to the modelling of socioeconomic behavior and has also developed identification analyses for the empirical analogs of these models. His other research focuses on techniques for policy evaluation and the econometrics of cross-country income differences. Durlauf is known as a critic of the use of the concept of social capital by social scientists and has challenged the ways that agent-based modelling and complexity theory have been employed to study socioeconomic phenomena.
In this episode, we delve deep into these critical topics, unpacking the complexities and exploring innovative perspectives. The conversation covers the multifaceted nature of economic disparities and the factors driving them, analyzing the dynamics of economic growth and the policies that can foster sustainable development. It also explores how sociological concepts can enhance our understanding of economic phenomena and lead to more comprehensive models. Additionally, the importance of mathematics in economic research and policy-making is emphasized. Steven shares his insights on how mathematical rigor contributes to the precision and clarity of economic theories and their practical applications.

This viewpoint above 👆🏽 is supported by many scholars and historians who argue that colonialism played a crucial role in the economic development of Western nations. Here are some points to consider: Colonialism and Economic Growth: 1. Resource Extraction: European powers extracted vast amounts of natural resources from their colonies, including precious metals, minerals, and agricultural products. This wealth was funneled back to Europe, significantly boosting its economies. 2. Labor Exploitation: The exploitation of labor, including slavery and forced labor, provided European countries with cheap or free labor, which greatly enhanced their economic productivity and growth. 3. Market Expansion: Colonies served as captive markets for European manufactured goods, ensuring a steady demand and facilitating industrial growth. 4. Infrastructure and Institutions: European countries built extensive infrastructure in their colonies primarily to serve their economic interests, which sometimes indirectly benefited the colonized regions but primarily facilitated the extraction of resources and the control over local economies. The Enlightenment and Scientific Growth: 1. Transfer of Knowledge: The translation of scientific and philosophical works from Islamic civilizations and other cultures played a significant role in the European Renaissance and Enlightenment. Scholars in the Islamic world had preserved and expanded upon the knowledge of ancient civilizations, and this body of knowledge was crucial for the intellectual development of Europe. 2. Intellectual Exchange: The interactions between Europe and other parts of the world, including the Islamic world, India, and China, brought new ideas, technologies, and knowledge that fueled European scientific and intellectual growth. Democracy and Institutions: 1. Selective Development: While democratic institutions and enlightenment ideals contributed to economic development, their impact was often selective and complemented by the economic advantages gained through colonial exploitation. 2. Economic Inequality: The benefits of economic growth in Europe were not evenly distributed and often came at the expense of the colonized populations who suffered significant social, economic, and political repression. Acknowledging the Full Picture: 1. Holistic View: Understanding the full picture of Western economic growth requires acknowledging both the contributions of internal developments such as the Enlightenment and the crucial role played by colonialism and exploitation. 2. Ethical Considerations: Recognizing the brutality and exploitation involved in colonialism is essential for a balanced historical perspective and for addressing historical injustices. In conclusion, while the Enlightenment, scientific growth, and the development of democratic institutions were important factors in Western economic growth, the exploitation and extraction of resources from colonized countries played a pivotal and often primary role. A comprehensive understanding of Western economic development must consider both these internal and external factors.

Western economists and economic thinkers often explain European economic growth from the late medieval ages to the modern period by emphasizing the Enlightenment, scientific advancements, and democracy. However, they frequently overlook or fail to acknowledge the significant role of colonialism, theft, and the exploitation of resources from colonized countries, as well as the brutality inflicted on the colonized people. I believe this aspect should be explored as one of the key drivers of Western economic growth. While I am not claiming that all economic growth resulted from colonization and exploitation, I argue that it was a primary factor, rather than the Enlightenment or so-called democratic institutions. Additionally, Western countries do not adequately explain how the Enlightenment occurred. They often neglect to recognize that it was through translating the knowledge and resources accumulated by Islamic civilization over the past 700 years that Europe was able to achieve the Enlightenment. Thank you.

Although nothing new, indeed great explanation with simple examples why some countries have this divergenistic pattern in economic growth. Thank you very much. The thing what grabbed my attention the idea why US is experiencing the inequality. His explanation as a segregation in all its meaning, especially in education is thrilling. Now I am thinking about the cases of rising inequality in Uzbekistan and his example of introduction of Presidential schools or other these type of a school in our country. It is somehow contradicting a little bit to his argument about investing in education. If there is a segregation in education as we can see in these schools, does it mean that we will experience the growing inequality in our country for the next few decades? And what can we do about it? What is the role of government should be here to overcome this issue of ever growing inequality in our country? Of course, Professor's example about the introduction of Stanford schools for people with disability is great, but in the case of Uzbekistan, the government is still lack of resources to introduce these type of school. Do you think introducing the private investment in education, and creating private schools is good for Uzbekistan? Hoshimov, I would appreciate to get answers for these questions and special thanks for this interview and if possible more talks with Professors like him. You are doing a great job.
